why you should be oil cleansing

Take a shot every time I say oil cleanse…

Every skincare junkie knows that an essential step in your skincare routine is cleansing, more specifically, the art of double cleansing. First, an oil or balm is used, followed by a foaming cleanser to finish off the removal of any remaining bacteria or makeup from the day. I was sure that the whole “double cleansing” trend was just that — a trend. Research shows differently, though.

The science of oil cleansing works by bonding to the oils and dirt on your skin. The oil also acts as a barrier to protect your skin and keep it soft and moisturized. I wear a full-coverage foundation with SPF 40+ daily, so it’s essential that I remove all products from my face at the end of the day. The most significant difference since incorporating an oil cleanser into my routine has been the decline in clogged pores and a boost in overall hydration. Oil cleansing can also help remove blackheads and pesky nose filaments.

I curated a few options of cleansers for sensitive, acne-prone, and normal skin. I hope it helps anyone interested in incorporating an oil cleanser into their skincare routine.

Note: These are all my recommendations based on my research.

I wanted to start off with the oil cleanser that I personally use. This oil from Sulwahsoo has been a godsend; it’s incredibly effective without causing any irritation or breakouts for me. I have very sensitive, acne-prone skin, so finding a product, whether makeup or skincare, that does the job without breaking me out can sometimes feel nearly impossible.

This next one is a must for those with sensitive skin (or those just trying to spend less than $20 on a cleanser). This oil-to-milk formula is non-comedogenic, fragrance-free, and packed with omega 3 + 6 and amino acids. Thank me later <3

K Beauty will always be the gold standard in skincare (and makeup). The brand Banila Co has a few options for oil balms, but for acne-prone skin, they recommend their pore clarifying balm. With tea tree to combat excess oil, aha + pha to gently exfoliate, and 4-terpineol to help with inflammation, this product is a perfect first step in your routine.

The take the day off cleanser from clinique. Simple and effective ingredients, fragrance-free, and no parabens. It's a tried and true product with a cult-like following.

This last option is purely indulgent for me. From the brand name to the packaging, this oil balm is the definition of luxury. Via Oak Essentials, this balm-to-oil cleanser with avocado and juniper oil gently dissolves makeup and impurities while helping to replenish the lipid layer and reinforce skin’s natural moisture barrier.

Please let me know if you try this one out; I’m kinda obsessed.
